Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

As I enter my mid-50’s in 2025, I’m learning more about the impacts of living in a post-menopausal world.
One thing no one ever mentioned to me about this phase of life was that the ability to tolerate alcohol, even just a glass or two of wine, declined dramatically. I’m uncovering aspects that were never discussed in my earlier years. One surprising discovery has been the significant change in my alcohol tolerance. It’s astonishing how even a modest amount of wine – just a glass or two – can now have such a pronounced effect on my system. It’s another reminder of how our bodies continue to evolve and surprise us, even in later stages of life.
A couple of health influencers I follow on social media have been sharing about the positive impact they have experienced when they quit or took a break from socially drinking. That led to my adventure of trying, “Dry January.” The real reason for this experiment was really due to how I was increasingly experiencing my heart racing in the middle of the night, which caused me to wake up around 3am with fear about what was happening. This would only happen after having one or two drinks on a weekend night.
I inquired about this with my cardiologist and she said, “Holiday heart is a real thing.” But offered no guidance on how to control it or what to do. In fact, as much as I like my primary care physician, OB/GYN, and cardiologist, no one ever shared that this might be related to my body’s ability to process alcohol after menopause.
As we enter the last week of January, I’ve experienced increased energy and I’m feeling great! I have not experienced the racing heart effects during this Dry January experiment. I’m really loving it! I have also discovered some great non-alcoholic options to bring to parties and events, so no one even knows what I’m drinking unless I’m inclined to share.
If you have had a similar experience, I would highly recommend starting off with a dry month and enjoy the positive effects!
